Researchers from Rice University in Houston, Texas think their “Magic Sand” or “Super Sand” could be the answer to purifying water more easily and effectively. While sand has been used to purify water before, coarse sand doesn’t purify as well as fine sand, and fine sand purifies very slowly. The new process promises to solve both those problems. A coating of graphite, creates the “magic sand.”
The solution could be cheap since one source of graphite is the waste produced by graphite mining companies. Also the researchers believe that it is possible to tailor the “magic sand” to filter out specific water-borne diseases or pollutants.
